Losing weight can be hard, but there are plenty of tricks you can try to make it easier.  By implementing one or two of these weight loss tips at a time, you won’t overwhelm yourself with a big list of rules that you can’t even remember, let alone stick to.  Pick a couple of these easy weight loss tips to focus on until they become habitual, and then start working on something else.  As you develop new eating habits, you will find it becoming easier to lose weight and keep it off.

Tip #1:  Drink Lots of Water.

Your body needs water, and most people don’t get enough.  If you are dehydrated, your body will not function at its peak performance.  In addition, many people get the signals for hunger and thirst mixed up.  If you feel like you are hungry all the time, it could be that you are really just thirsty.  Try keeping a glass of water nearby all day so that you can easily get a drink whenever you want, and when you start feeling hungry, drink a glass of water before eating.  That might be all you need.

Tip #2:  Eat Slowly

It takes time for the body to get the signal that you are full, so if you eat quickly, you could be consuming a lot more calories than your body needs without realizing it.  Slow down and chew eat bite of food for several seconds before swallowing.  Take the time to savor your food.  You will enjoy it more, and you’ll make it easier for your body to digest and use the food you eat.

Tip #3:  Plan Ahead for an Afternoon Snack

Most people get tired in the afternoon, and heading to the fridge or grabbing a candy bar for a quick pick-me-up is a common response.  It is fine to snack in the afternoon, but filling up with junk will just give you a quick burst of energy that is followed by a quick crash.  Instead, keep some healthy snacks on hand, such as carrot sticks and apples.  Try to include some protein, such as peanut butter or a hard-boiled egg, in your afternoon snack rather than consuming only carbs.  This will help you stay energized longer.

Tip #4:  Eliminate Temptation

One of the best weight loss tips is to avoid bringing food into the house that will be a temptation for you.  If you know that you can’t eat just one chocolate chip cookie, having a whole box of them in your cupboard is a bad idea.  Eventually, you will eat them all.  If you’re feeling an irresistible urge to buy cookies while you’re out shopping, try buying a single cookie from the deli rather than purchasing a whole package.  Treating yourself to a single cookie at the end of your shopping trip is a much better option than bringing home dozens of them to eat later.

Tip #5:  Get Enough Sleep

This is one of those healthy weight loss tips that will do a lot more for you than just help you lose weight.  Your body depends on sleep to recharge itself to prepare for the coming day.  If you don’t get enough sleep, it can affect all of your body’s systems.  Tired people don’t have as much energy as those who are well-rested, and they often try to boost their energy levels by eating more.  Lack of sleep can also compromise your immune system, making your more susceptible to all kinds of illnesses.

Tip #6:  Eat More Veggies

When you eat vegetables, you fill yourself up with fewer calories than what you would get in the same amount of another type of food.  Try serving two or three vegetables at each meal instead of just one to provide variety.  That way, you can get plenty of veggies without feeling like you have to eat a ton of carrots or peas.  You can just eat a reasonable amount of each type.

Tip #7:  Write Down What You Eat

This is one of those weight loss tips that will help no matter what kind of diet you’re on.  Keeping a record of what you eat forces you to think about the foods you are putting into your mouth.  It’s easy to sneak a scoop of ice cream, but would you think twice about it if you knew you had to write it down?  In addition to providing some discouragement for making bad food choices, keeping a food journal also allows you to see the connection between what you eat and how well you are progressing on your diet.  You might also notice that certain foods make you feel tired or sluggish.  If so, you should avoid those foods in the future.

Tip #8:  Give Yourself Some Motivation

If you can picture yourself thin, you’ll have a better chance of succeeding.  Are you thinking about rewarding yourself with a new pair of jeans when you get down to the next pants size?  Go buy them now, and hang them somewhere you will see them every day.  Make sure the pair you buy is a style that you can really get excited about and picture yourself wearing them.  Try them on once a week or so to see if you can comfortably wear them.

Tip #9:  Eliminate Sugar

Sooner or later, you’re going to have to face the fact that sugar is just plain bad for you, and artificial sweeteners are not any better.  The worst source of sugar for dieters is soda and other sugary drinks.  A recent study showed that those who drink sugary beverages tend to consume more calories per day than those who get their sugar from other sources, such as candy.  Cutting out sugary sodas is a great start, but if you are really serious about losing weight, you need to give up sugar completely.  An occasional sugary snack once per month or so is fine once you reach your target weight, but until then, stick with foods that don’t contain sugar or artificial sweeteners.  If you need some extra sweetness in your diet, stevia is the healthiest alternative.  This is a natural sweetener that has very little effect on blood glucose levels.

Tip #10:  Eat Smaller Meals

Research shows that people who eat four or five small meals per day are less likely to overeat than those who only eat two or three meals.  The reason for this is that if you don’t eat often enough, you are so hungry by mealtime that is hard to keep from stuffing yourself.  Eating less food more often keeps your body fueled so that you are less likely to overdo it.
